Early vs. Regular Admissions? |
There are different types of applications processes (early decision, early action, regular decision, rolling admissions). The early action/decision application process is available for certain colleges. This is where seniors submit their applications early in the fall (typically October or November) and find out their acceptance decision prior to the second semester of their senior year.
Students who apply early action/early decision and get accepted typically get to choose their residential plans before the other students. This can be beneficial if there is a certain dorm or area where you would like to live. It also removes the stress early on, so you can fully enjoy the last semester of high school! Students who are not accepted during early action/decision may be able to re-apply for regular decision. Do not get discouraged if you get deferred to the regular application deadline. This just means they need more time to look at your application to make a decision. The early decision process and early action process have some differences. The early decision process is a binding process where students must attend the school if they are accepted. If you are accepted for early decision, you must withdraw other applications. Only apply for early decision if you are 100% certain you want to go that college. On the other hand, early action comes with the same benefits, but is not binding! You are still free to choose a different college to attend with no penalty. Some students choose to wait until the regular decision deadline because they want more time to raise their ACT/SAT scores, which is okay! Regular admissions usually end in January, but can sometimes stay open until the summer after graduation. However, there is a firm deadline with this process, so make sure you know when your application is due ahead of time! |
Rolling admissions is a different type of admission process. With this process, students can apply to a college at any time during the application time frame. This process usually opens up in early fall. Sometimes, rolling admissions are open until the summer after you graduate! With rolling admission, students can apply at any time and receive a decision after a few weeks of submitting their application. There is no firm deadline. Colleges with rolling admission will continue to accept students until they are full.

Most students apply through their GA Futures account. However, you can usually go directly to the college website to find the application, as well. You can also use the Common Application to apply to some colleges.
If you are using the common application, please remind your counselor about upcoming deadlines. These deadlines and notifications are not sent to the counselor, so be proactive! |
